New Faces, New Places
Scott Lovaas joins Broadmoor Community Church
in Colo., while Russell Baker moves into Bountiful Community UCC in Utah.
The Rocky Mountain Conference had two new faces come
aboard in August. Rev. Scott Lovass of Maine joined Broadmoor Community
Church in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Russell Baker stepped in as minister
at Bountiful Community UCC in Bountiful, Utah, according to Keith Anders,
Bountiful search chair.
Lovaas left as Interim Minister at Durham Congrega-tional Church in Durham, Maine.
He will receive his Ph.D. in Media Studies in December 2007 from the University
of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has accomplished his Master
of Social Work from the University of Denver in 1990.
Lovaas (pronounced Lo-vahs) comes to Colorado with his wife Anne Marsh and five
daughters: Twins Mateal and Jessie (age 22), Elise (age 11), Alden (age 10) and
India (age 7.)

"Scott's greatest asset is his ability to speak to anyone, young or old,
in an accepting manner," says N. Miller, a Co-Worker. "He cares a lot
for peopleand he has a magical way with children."
A Colleague in Ministry, L. Wagoner says of Lovaas, "Scott's sermons are
lively and witty. He manages to blend contemporary issues very nicely with scripture.
He delivers his sermons in a considerate way on social issues that are thought
provoking. His major strengths are his communication skills and his ability to
listen with empathy."
Lovaas' Statement of Ministry (excerpt)
“ A Church and its members can and must be purveyors of hope, healing,
and service in the community. A vibrant and caring church transforms individuals,
families,
and towns through collective leadership and innovative programming. The church
needs to provide a myriad of avenues for people to grow and develop their relationships
with one another, the community, and God.”
Russell Baker
Baker comes from Berkeley, Calif. where he has lived with his wife Anita and
their two adult children, Jonathan and Lorna. Baker grew up mostly in Virginia,
but also spent some time with his military family in Connecticut, Cuba and Sparks,
Nev. Baker graduated the University of Richmond in 1961 with a B.A. and earned
his masters degree in theology from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia in
1969 and his Doctor of Ministry from Lexington Theological Seminary in Lexington,
Kentucky in 1984. Russell's last church was in Benton Harbor, Michigan where
he served for 6 years.

Baker is an accomplished singer of classical and folk music. He plays
both banjo and guitar and has written and arranged songs and organized
singing groups. He
loves to garden and landscape and enjoys hiking and cross country skiing. He
is also skilled at remodeling and repairing old homes.
Baker was attracted to Bountiful Community Church because he read in our profile
a desire to provide programs for those in need. He feels we are challenged
still to follow in the footsteps of Jesus to heal broken relationships and
forge a
society based on equality for all and especially supporting those outcast-a
society affirming the high principles of love, justice, liberation and peace.
