Carol Garn awarded Church Person of the Year

Carol Garn, a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Boulder, was awarded the 2006 Church Person of the Year. She has given her life to the wider mission of the church, the local congregation, and to the communities she has lived in.

Through the Common Global Ministries, Carol has taught in both South Africa and Turkey, serving to bring western style education to students in secondary schools, which had requested assistance in education.

In the mid 1960s, Carol applied to the UCC Board for World Ministries, the precursor to our current Wider Church Ministries, to teach through overseas mission opportunities. From 1965 to 1971, then again from 1975 to 1980, she taught at the Inanda Seminary in Inanda, Durban, South Africa. While at this leading boarding school for girls, Carol filled many roles including teaching mathematics, vice principal, acting principal, and counselor.

Carol’s next appointment, in 1982, was to Üsk übar American Academy for Girls in Istanbul, Turkey; which later became co-educational. Again, Carol filled several different roles, teaching mathematics, and vice principal/middle school dean of students. Carol retired from Istanbul in 1997.

Alison Stendahl, an Istanbul colleague, has commented, “Carol gave her life to her job and was an excellent mathematics teacher. She is phenomenally organized and great at detail work. Carol prepared the school schedule for a number of years and was a perfectionist at her job.”

Through her church in Boulder, Carol has again taken on many roles, serving as Financial Secretary, and something called “Magnificent, Meticulous Manager of the Church Directory.” Carol assists with welcoming new members to the life of the church, the stewardship drive, and general help when called upon.

Carol also gives her time and abilities to Boulder’s Emergency Family Assistance Association, Boulder County AIDS Program, Community Table dinners for the homeless, Hospice Thrift Shop which she helped to initiate, and not surprisingly, she tutors struggling math students at a local middle school.

A sentence in her nomination material sums it up, “Carol is a dedicated volunteer and embodiment of Christian Faith.
